Lobbyists - Why?

I read that companies spent 2o million dollars to lobby against a bill. Where does that money go? Is there any accounting of where that money went? How many steak dinners and golf vacations did that but? As far as I'm concerned, for a majority, lobbyist = corruption and greed based on what I know so far. I welcome comments because they help me to become a more informed person.
